Lance “SYCE Lance” Matthews, CEO

Who is SYCE Lance?

Lance Matthews, also known as SYCE Lance, visionary, creator of Sending You Creative Entertainment (SYCE) and A2IM BIMA Fellow, began his musical journey long before taking his first breath, having been immersed in a womb which lived and breathed music. In this microcosm, Lance was afforded decades of music; from 60’s Motown to 70’s classic rock, funk, rap, and 80’s RnB, sprinkled with a smidge of classical, his love of music began. Lance was born on Misawa Air Base in Japan in 1986. Little did he know that his modest beginning would lead to a life where music became pure. As a military dependent, duty stations were not stable but music was always consistent. After leaving Japan and completing a stint in Tacoma, Washington, the family separated from the military and relocated in Washington, DC, the birthplace, and home of his parents.

With his love of music steadily growing, in his 6th grade of school, believing someday he would create his own musical stylings, Lance asked to be enrolled in band, where the instrument of his choice was the saxophone. Upon meeting his music instructor, Lance was told that the saxophone was a very difficult instrument to play, due the amount of breath required to make sound. Undeterred, Lance was enrolled in the class and the joy of playing an instrument began.

In the summer before entering the 8th grade, Lance was enrolled in the DC Youth Orchestra Program, a non-profit, located in Northwest Washington, DC, that believes “every child should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and play in an orchestra.” And Lance did, performing on-stage, the jazz standards of Duke Ellington and others. Lance had been forever smitten by the love of creating music. This love entered a new phase when the popularity of rap music entered his orbit and dreams of becoming a producer were ever present.

As a freshman in high school, a surprising offer was presented by a teacher, who by the way was not a music teacher. It was an opportunity to receive a product called FruityLoops. The skies parted and Lance’s world opened up. This small gesture of kindness, solidified not only in Lance’s mind, but in his being, this is who I am. I am a producer! The next 10 years, from 2003 - 2013 of the Lance’s journey included:

  • Joining the rap group, Raw Talent, as the producer

  • Graduating from Morgan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Business

  • Relocating to Atlanta Georgia with JBravo of Billboard Hitmakers to realize his dream of becoming a producer

These years became the fertile ground on which Lance began planting and nurturing the seeds of his brainchild, Sending You Creative Entertainment (SYCE). After returning from Atlanta to the DMV, in 2013, Lance opened his first production studio business called, “Sound Theory Studios.” With expansion ever present on his mind and belief in the talent that abounds in the DMV, in 2014, Lance and his partner Jason started the SYCE Series, a bi-weekly platform where burgeoning artists could hone their craft and gain notoriety in front of a live audience while on the road to bringing their aspirations into fruition.

At the end of each evening’s performances, the winner would be crowned the King or Queen of SYCE series by audience decision, complete with a crown, at least until the next week’s performances, and a personalized SYCE hoodie which included the artist’s Instagram name and the date they were crowned.

In 2015, Lance extended to his desire to give back to the community that shaped and molded him. Lance created Sound Theory’s Urban Development Youth Outreach (STUDYO) also known as Project STUDYO, where young men and women, ages 14-18, are provided a creative outlet to express their thoughts, emotions and passions through music entertainment and recording arts.

Lance began to rebrand SYCE as an entertainment company in 2018, building upon his now 20 years of experience in music production and audio engineering which have expanded into:

  • Mixing and Mastering

  • Music Publishing

  • Music Distribution

  • Event Hosting

  • Podcasting

  • Live Audio Engineering

  • Sound Design
